HarperCollins Video Interview with Pike

Although this is not the interview I've been talking about (you'll get that next week, as promised), I wanted to slip in this live interview from HarperCollins for a treat.

Don't you just love it when an author is so genuine and down-to-earth? When I watched this (combined with all of my email interactions w/ Pike arranging excerpts and interviews), I just felt giddy inside: I am thrilled when someone like this "makes it" -- it just feels good!

I just read the chapter and watched the interview.

What strikes me about the writing is that it has a realistic feel to it. Reminds me of how E.T. starts and how the Narnia Tales start. I'm not talking about specifics, more about the realistic mood. I sometimes feel, as a writer, that we are just supposed to hurry up and start with the action. I sometimes wonder if the movie E.T. was made now, instead of when I was a kid, if it would cut that wonderful dinner table conversation and start with finding ET.

I think that kids will be able to related to these issues. The video interview shows how important they were as a kid. I liked hearing that importance resonate in Pike's voice.

That time of life is so important. It's formative. Perhaps that's why YA lit can be of interest to adults.
